To celebrate the year of the dragon, I wanted to create a dragon that represented my heritage. The colors used are inspired by the traditional colors used in decorating buildings in Korea. The use of blue, green and red is called dancheong.

Koreans love to eat japchae during special celebrations. This is a tasty noodle dish with noodles made of sweet potato starch that have a ‘glass’ appearance.

The haetae is a popular creature from Korean mythology. With a lion-like body and broom-like tail to sweep away evil, it’s said to protect against fire and chaos and stand for order. Statues of haetae can be seen outside buildings that people wanted to protect like Seoul’s famous Gyeongbokgung. Here is my cute version originally done with Copic markers.
